Retail establishments have different needs from those of the online variety. With a retail store you have the credit card present for the
transaction so this is referred to as a card present (CP) business. Whereas in the ecommerce arena the retailer doesn't ever actually swipe the credit
card so these are referred to as a card not present (CNP) business.
Since the card is present in the transactions there is less risk of fraud, so you receive a better discount rate from the credit card companies. For more information
